Former Student Survey
Wayne State University's Center for Urban Studies was asked by the Michigan Department of Education Office of Special Education to conduct a yearly survey of former Michigan students who had an Individualized Education Plan at the time they left high school. The survey asks students who exited school one year ago about any employment and/or postsecondary education they have had since leaving high school.
Each year, former students in approximately one third of Member Districts in the state - that is by cohort - receive a survey.
The survey is administered during the spring and summer.
Prior to the survey launch, an email is sent out to all Intermediate School Districts Special Education Directors announcing the survey deployment.
The Cohort List details the Member Districts in each cohort for a given year.
Results from the survey assist in determining the effectiveness of the education system.
Survey Results
States must report annually their performance in the Michigan's Part B State Performance Plan and Annual Performance Report.
Indicator 14 of the State Perfomance Plan measures "the percentage of youth who are no longer in secondary school, had IEPs in effect at the time they left school, and were:
- Enrolled in higher education within one year of leaving high school,
- Enrolled in higher education or competitively employed within one year of leaving high school, or
- Enrolled in higher education or in some other postsecondary education or training program; or competitively employed or in some other employment within one year of leaving high school."
